Sri Lanka’s Malinga retires from Test cricket

article_imageCOLOMBO, Sri Lanka (AP) — Sri Lanka paceman Lasith Malinga has announced his retirement from test cricket in an effort to prolong his limited-overs career.

Malinga says a long-standing degenerative condition in his right knee "needs to be carefully managed" and fears playing test cricket "could lead to a permanent injury."

The 27-year-old fast bowler, who starred for Sri Lanka in its run to the World Cup final this month, says he is "fully available for selection for all Sri Lanka’s one-day internationals and T20 matches."

Malinga recently chose to make himself unavailable to Sri Lanka for the team’s three tests in England this summer, while continuing to play in the lucrative Indian Premier League.

Malinga played 30 tests, taking 101 wickets.
