I Don’t Know How She Does It…A Lovely Waste Of Time

Courtesy The Sunday Leader - By Sumaya Samarasinghe
Kate Reddy (Sarah Jessica Parker), keeps running and running and juggling her crazy life the best she can.

When the movie begins, we see Kate buying a ready made pie for her daughter’s school bake sale. She has just come back from an exhausting business trip and is found in the kitchen by her semi employed architect husband Richard, played by the always charming Greg Kinnear (when is that man going to ever get the role of a career?).

Kate is a hedge fund manager for an investment company in Boston. Despite not always having the time to brush her hair or clean the chocolate Nutella from her jacket, Kate is brilliant at her work and her career is flourishing at the expense of the time she spends with husband and her two small children.

Her mother in law never fails to remind her that a stronger mother’s presence would have probably made her two year old son talk sooner; but Kate seems strangely immune to those comments.

Her life is one big juggle. She tries to do all the “motherly” things by taking her kids to school and preparing their lunches while she cannot let go of the opportunity to work with Jack Abelhammer, played by a super suave but yet likable Pierce Brosnan who is perfect in his role as a hot shot business man. Kate finds herself obliged to travel regularly to New York to work with Jack and some flirtation between the two begins.

The supporting cast somehow steals the show. Kate’s friend and single mother Allison played by the gorgeous Christina Hendricks is a lawyer who addresses the camera directly when speaking about Kate; unfortunately the statements she makes are far from filled with any substance and sound as interesting as her shopping list. The best thing in the film is probably Olivia Munn as Momo, Kate’s cold hearted and workaholic brilliant second in command who loses all her cool when she discovers that she is pregnant.

Guys worry more about their appearance Everyone wants flawless skin, flat abs and a fab rear

Everyone wants flawless skin, flat abs and a fab rear. But men don’t always admit it. So, companies that sell products promising to help guys lose weight, conceal bloat and enhance skin have to walk a fine line between men’s vanity and masculinity. But how do you market moisturizer to the Marlboro Man?

Dove plays the theme song to the 1930s TV western "The Lone Ranger" and compares guys’ skin with cowhide in commercials for its men’s shower gel. Weight Watchers uses TV spots with trimmed-down singer Jennifer Hudson to market to women, but opts for average Joes talking about drinking beer and grilling meat in ads for its weight loss program for men. Dr Pepper is more overt in ads for its diet soda targeted toward men with the tagline: "It’s not for women."

The ads come as guys of all ages are succumbing to growing pressure to suck in their guts and hide their blemishes. In one of the biggest signs that men are more image-conscious, the number of chemical peels, laser hair removal and other cosmetic procedures on men is up 45 percent since 2000, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons.

We are facing new challenges, Queen in opening address at CHOGM

Head of the Commonwealth, Queen Elizabeth II, in her opening address to the 2011 Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in Perth, yesterday said the 54-nation body faces new challenges ranging from terrorism to food security and climate change.
“The CHOGM was last held in Australia at Coolum in 2002.
“It came when the world was still reeling from a new chapter in global terrorism. They were uncertain times at that summit,” she said.
“Almost a decade later, we find ourselves confronting new and fresh challenges such as insecurity and uncertainty in finance, food supply, climate change, and trade and development,” Queen Elizabeth II said.
The Queen added that the 2011 CHOGM provides the perfect opportunity to address these issues and find responses to today’s crises and challenges. The Queen said that she is delighted to join the Heads of State in Perth “for a meeting that promises to bring new vibrancy to the Commonwealth”.
“This city is known for its optimism; this state is known for its opportunity and potential; and, this country is known for its warmth, openness and generosity. We therefore come together in a place that embraces so much of the Commonwealth’s spirit, and we are grateful to the people of Australia for their welcome,” she said in her opening address to the CHOGM 2011.
She concluded her address with an Aboriginal proverb which is itself enduring: “We are all visitors to this time, this place. We are just passing through. Our purpose here is to observe, to learn, to grow, to love... and then we return home”.
Heads of States and Foreign Ministers from 54 countries, including President Mahinda Rajapaksa, are attending the CHOGM 2011. President Rajapaksa, as the leader of the only country that eradicated terrorism, was the cynosure of all eyes. He is expected to take over as Chair of the next CHOGM in Sri Lanka in 2013.
President Rajapaksa met Bangladesh Prime Minister, Sheikh Hasina on the sidelines of CHOGM 2011 at the Conference and Exhibition Center in Perth, Australia. He was associated with External Affairs Minister Prof . G.L. Peiris and Sri Lanka High Commissioner in Australia, Admiral Thisara Samarasinghe. Bangladesh Foreign Minister, Dr.Dipumoni was also present at the bilateral meeting between Sri Lanka and the Bangladesh leaders.

සදාම්- කර්නල්ට කියන්ට;

අන්තිමට ඉතුරු වෙන්නෙ;

මගේ සල්ලිවලින් ඉගෙනගත්තු උන්;

කියන්නේ බහු ජාතික සමාගමක්;
ඒකට කරන්ට පුළුවන් වැඩ දෙකයි;

ගඩාෆි- හිතට ගන්නවා සදාම්;

හොඳ වැඩේ;

If Sri Lanka wins Commonwealth Games bid: Ample opportunities for investment

Courtesy - Sunday Observer By Anuradha KODAGODA

With just three more weeks to go to select the country to host the 2012 Commonwealth Games, speculation is rife as to whether Sri Lanka will be afforded the opportunity of hosting the Games. The decision will be made at the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) general assembly in St. Kitts and Nevis on November 11. In October 2010, President Mahinda Rajapaksa appointed an Organising Committee (OC) comprising high ranking officials of the Government as well as leading businessmen from the private sector to attend to obtaining the bid. The OC is co-chaired by Mahindananda Aluthgamage, Minister of Sports and Ajith Nivard Cabraal, Governor of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka.

The Sunday Observer spoke to Governor, Central Bank, Ajith Nivard Cabraal, Co-Chairman of the Organising Committee. He said that, “Sri Lanka was confident of winning the bid, with a majority of the Commonwealth countries voting in favour of Sri Lanka.

Most of the countries have already pledged their support to us. The fact that there is a seven-year lag between the vote and hosting of the Games means that this time period is for the country to make preparations to host the games and providing the opportunity for new countries to emerge. “I strongly believe that the whole experience hinges not on being event-ready but on getting ready over seven years. There are enormous opportunities for young people to train, for venues to be constructed, for businesses to grow, and for legacies to be planned,” “We look forward to welcoming professional athletes to our state-of-the-art training venues in 2018, we have looked to peak at the right time.

CHOGM 2011: SL opposed to controversial proposals President Rajapaksa leaves for Perth today

Courtesy - The Island by Shamindra Ferdinando

Sri Lanka will strongly oppose moves to execute recommendations by an 11-member Commonwealth Eminent Persons Group (EPG), particularly the creation of an Office for Commissioner for Democracy, the Rule of Law and Human Rights.

The setting up of the new office will be an important consideration for the 54 Commonwealth Heads of Government (CHOGM) 2011 when they meet in Perth, Western Australia later this week. The three-day summit will begin on Oct.28.President Mahinda Rajapaksa will leave today (Oct. 24) for the biennial meeting. President Rajapaksa will take over from the Australian Premier Julia Gillard as the Commonwealth Chair-in-Office for 2013-2015.

The controversial post is one of the recommendations of the EPG set-up by Commonwealth leaders at their last meeting in Port-of-Spain in Nov. 2009. Led by former Malaysian Premier Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, the EPG comprises members from Ghana, Jamaica, Pakistan, Uganda, Australia, Mozambique, UK, Guyana, Canada and Kiribati.

The EPG’s report is one of the two controversial reports scheduled to be presented to CHOGM 2011, the other being recommendations by the nine-member Commonwealth Ministerial Action Group (CMAG) comprising Australia, Bangladesh, Ghana, Jamaica, Maldives, Namibia, New Zealand, Vanuatu and Trinidad and Tobago.

The External Affairs Ministry told The Island that the two reports had come up for discussion when the Commonwealth Secretary General, Kamalesh Sharma met President Mahinda Rajapaksa and External Affairs Minister Prof. G. L. Peiris on the sidelines of the 66th session of the UNGA in New York. The meeting took place in the wake of an LTTE campaign to influence the Commonwealth to suspend Sri Lanka and call off the CHOGM 2013 in Colombo over accountability issues. Sources said Sri Lanka opposed both reports, particularly the establishment of the Office for Commissioner for Democracy, the Rule of Law and Human Rights, when Commonwealth Foreign Ministers met in September to discuss preparations for the Oct. summit. Sources said that Sri Lanka hadn’t been alone in objecting to the reports.

Australia, UK, Canada and New Zealand are pushing for the immediate adoption of the reports.

Ministerial sources said that interested parties could exploit the Office for Commissioner for Democracy, the Rule of Law and Human Rights.

Sources said that the manner in which the Office of the UN Human Rights Commissioner had been used to promote the LTTE’s agenda was evidence how such mechanisms could be abused. Sources said that the circumstances in which the UNSG Ban Ki moon had sent controversial Darusman Panel report to the Human Rights Council and the UN Human Rights Commissioner last September underscored the need on the part of Sri Lanka to be vigilant about clandestine operations. Sources said that the LTTE had secured the support of major political parties in Commonwealth countries, including the UK, Canada and Australia.

Microsoft closes $8.5 billion Skype acquisition

Microsoft has completed its $8.5 billion acquisition of Skype Global, giving the software company a major foothold in the growing market for Internet telephony services.

"Skype is a phenomenal product and brand that is loved by hundreds of millions of people around the world," Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer said in a statement late last night. "We look forward to working with the Skype team to create new ways for people to stay connected to family, friends, clients and colleagues--anytime, anywhere."

Microsoft announced in May the deal to acquire Skype. A final hurdle was cleared last week when European regulators approved the deal.

Skype's voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) services let people hold free video and voice calls over the Internet; Skype charges a fee for "SkypeOut," which lets Skype users dial ordinary phone numbers, and "SkypeIn, which lets people dial an ordinary phone number that actually connects through to a Skype account online. Both services are useful for bypassing steep international calling rates using conventional telephone service.

Woman’s Role in Male Impotence

Maintaining a satisfying sex life is an important component in a healthy marriage. When sexual or erectile dysfunction is a factor, whether the cause is psychological or physical, the emotional impact on both partners are considerable. Since both the husband and the wife suffer this emotional pain in silence, their personal life satisfaction is diminished and their marriage may be in peril.

Erectile dysfunction does not have to mean a dysfunctional relationship. It is a particular challenge that will not disappear by it self, but that can be helped by medical attention, psychotherapy, and supportive and constructive action. How couples choose to handle the situation will determine the impact on their relationship.

The female partner needs to take the lead to get her husband and the relationship on the road to recovery. The man may be suffering, paralyzed by feelings of inadequacy or shame. The wife needs to start by talking, but bring up the subject in an emotionally supportive way, at a time of reduced tension. Often, it is easier to discuss sex outside the bedroom.

• Keep the conversation constructive and supportive, especially initially. She can discuss her deeper feelings later, once a solution is underway.

Why suffer dangerous fools gladly?

 Editorial - The Island

In the aftermath of last Saturday's gun battle where presidential advisor Bharatha Lakshman Premachandra was killed and UPFA MP Duminda Silva critically injured, an underworld figure was arrested with 16 firearms! How many lethal weapons other criminals working for the UPFA politicians have in their possession is anybody's guess. Maybe thousands among them!

The security forces and the police are looking for the LTTE's arms caches in the former war zone and they have so far unearthed thousands of lethal weapons and tons of ammunition and explosives belonging to the northern terrorists. Why they are not allowed to conduct such operations in the southern parts of the country to recover illegal weapons in the hands of criminals is the question. The government launched a much advertised anti-crime drive but it was throttled for some unknown reasons. Was it to protect the UPFA’s dangerous underworld pets?

Now that the war is over, there is no reason why politicians should be issued with firearms or allowed to have private bodyguards with or without weapons. Only a few political leaders deserve extraordinary security. Others must be stripped of their arms as they are a threat to others.

A sex strike halted a feud, but don’t try this at home

Women halted a war between two clans by withholding sex, it was reported last week. A group of wives realized that a violent feud was blocking the road to the village of Dadi in Magindanao, the Philippines.

So they made an ultimatum: no cuddles or related activities would be allowed until the feud stopped. The women, mainly seamstresses, were worried about getting their goods to the market.

The men, aghast, got no sympathy, even from religious leaders. Alim Basher, chairman of the Imam Council of the Philippines, said that despite the ‘duty’ that Islamic spouses had to each other, he saw nothing wrong with the women’s withdrawal of services in that particular area.

A week after the strike began, peace reigned in the district, GMA News TV reported. I’m amazed the guys even lasted seven days.

Having said that, I have to admit that the guys at my local coffee shop were far less impressed with the story than I was. One long-married gentleman, formerly from the disciplined services, said: "If my wife went on a sex strike, it would be months before I even noticed."

Do not neglect your Child

The statistics on physical child abuse are alarming. It is estimated hundreds of thousands of children are physically abused each year by a parent or close relative. Thousands die. For those who survive, the emotional trauma remains long after the external bruises have healed. Communities and the courts recognize that these emotional ‘hidden bruises’ can be treated. Early recognition and treatment is important to minimize the long term effect of physical abuse. Whenever a child says he or she has been abused, it must be taken seriously and immediately evaluated.
Child abuse and exploitation in the South-East Asia Region is largely under-reported or ‘hidden’. It occurs in various forms and is deeply rooted in the cultural, economic and socio-cultural environment. Child abuse is common among girls as well as boys.
As stated above, child abuse is a phenomenon that has prevailed for centuries but only has captured worldwide attention in the past few decades. After many years of denial, Sri Lanka too has recognized the existence of many forms of violence and cruelty against children and the long and short-term ill effects of abuse on children. Initial work on the extent of sexual abuse and domestic child labor, the existence of physical abuse and description of the use of child soldiers during the time of war as a form of child abuse was made.
Although concern and care of children has been recognized in the traditions of Sri Lanka, the incidents of child abuse were denied or interpreted otherwise in many instances, until recently, in most part of the history.

Child has every right to express his/her thoughts
A caregiver must arrange for neces-sary care and supervision for a child during any period of time throughout the day.
After a phase of denial, as a result of increased awareness and recognition in the society, the culturally justified abusive actions against children, such as physical abuse and exploitations such as child labor and child involvement in armed conflicts, are increasingly recognized as forms of abuse.
Yet, the massive responsibility of prevention of child abuse, intervention and child protection could not be taken upon by a few institutions alone or Government. The preventative and intervention measures should also emerge from society through its recognition. What is Child Abuse? What is child abuse? There are many definitions of child abuse. The originally used definition is as follows: “Acts or omissions by a care-giver leading to actual or potential damage to health and development and exposure to unnecessary suffering to the child”

A wider definition is:

“Anything which individuals, institutions or processes do (acts) or fail (Omissions) to do which directly or indirectly harms children or damages the prospects of safe and healthy development into adulthood”
The World Health Organization Report on the Consultation on Child Abuse and Prevention (1999) proposed modified definitions for child abuse, which cover wider areas.
Definition of Child Abuse “Child abuse or maltreatment constitutes all forms of physical and/or emotional ill-treatment, sexual abuse, neglect or negligent treatment or commercial or other exploitation, resulting in actual or potential harm to the child’s health, survival, development or dignity in the context of a relationship of responsibility, trust or power” WHO 1999

Steve Jobs: The man who changed the world

During Tuesday’s launch of the iPhone 4S, Apple Vice President Scott Forstall asked a simple question from Siri, the new voice assistance system featured on the phone. “Who are you?” Forstall asked. “I am a humble personal assistant” replied Siri. That is exactly what we want our gadgets to do, instead of complicating our lives further. Gadgets should help us live a little more easily, relax a bit and when occasion demands, be a little productive as well. Apple co-founder and former CEO Steve Jobs (56), who passed away just a day after the launch of the iPhone 4S by his successor Tim Cook, understood this perfectly. Siri is a perfect example of Jobs’ vision and ingenuity. And it was not even invented by him.
Steve Jobs
But Jobs realised the immense potential of the voice application and bought the company that invented it. With Jobs at the helm, Apple engineers refined the product to the point that you can almost carry on a conversation with your iPhone. Jobs knew that it is easier to speak than to type. Others knew it too, but they could not add this functionality to a device that we would all love to have.
Back in 1997, he presented to the world the innovation that now hosts Siri: A touchscreen phone called the iPhone. Jobs said at the time that touch and our fingers are tailor made for such an application.
That is what made Jobs different. Just as in the ads that Apple aired on TV, Jobs was smart enough to “think different(ly)”. He made gadgets that no one else even imagined, which have become objects of desire that many people cannot live without.

The film begins with two teenage Ukrainian girls Raya and Irka being lured away from their homes under some false pretenses to Bosnia.
The next scene shows Kathryn Bolkovac played by the stunning Rachel Weisz, a police officer from Nebraska. She is a quiet, intense woman well respected by her work colleagues who is going through a personal trauma of her own; Kathryn has lost custody of her only daughter. The teenager is being taken away to Atlanta by her ex husband and his new family as he accuses his ex wife of being “married to her job” and implies that she is an unfit mother.
When her job transfer request to Atlanta fails, she decides to take up a financially lucrative position as a United Nations Peace keeping officer in post war Bosnia in order to save up enough money to move closer to her daughter.
Hired by Democra Corp which is a pseudonym for the DynCorp, a US based global government services contractor; Kathryn finds herself in post war Bosnia and her cool and fearless attitude makes her investigate a case of domestic violence which would have gone untouched by her cynical co-workers.
Soon, she is offered a post by Madeleine Rees, the head of the United Nations Human Rights Commission and asked to join the United Nations Gender Affairs Office which works alongside the local police in investigating rape, domestic abuse and sex trafficking.

Flowers, letters, and gadgets at Apple store 'shrines'

To thank Jobs for being different:

US: Grateful fans flocked to Apple stores across the United States Thursday erecting makeshift shrines to deceased co-founder Steve Jobs to thank him for inventing the gadgets that revolutionized their lives.

Jobs, who died Wednesday at age 56 after a long battle with pancreatic cancer, has been hailed by world leaders and tech moguls, but also by ordinary consumers, including in the Georgetown neighborhood of Washington, where the sidewalk in front of the Apple store was strewn with flowers and candles.

"I'm here to pay tribute to Steve Jobs, someone in the universe who made it possible for me to be engineer," said Clarence Labor, a worker for hi-tech company Intel.

And he had a special tribute for Jobs, depositing three early Mac computers in front of the store.

"Those Macs are my very first computers," said Labor, an unabashed fan who compared the Apple visionary to American inventor Thomas Edison.

Labor, who purchased the computers at an early "Macstore" in California, said he considered himself lucky to have met Jobs in person. "I met him in the late 80s when he came to an Intel conference to announce that Intel would be part of Macs," he said.

"We lost someone we should be privileged to admire," Labor said. "We can tell our children and grandchildren we knew him."

As he spoke another man placed a silver iPod on which he had written "Thank You, RIP" outside the store. AFP

Dutch sovereignty in Sri Lanka

A treaty was signed in 1638 between Rajasinha II of Sri Lanka and Westerwold, acting on behalf of Frederic Hendrik, Prince of Orange and the States General of the Netherlands. The Dutch were granted monopoly in cinnamon, pepper, wax and ivory. In return, the Dutch would help Rajasinha take back the Portuguese occupied territories. The Dutch would fight alongside the Sinhalese and Rajasinha would foot the bill. Rajasinha had deliberated for several days with his chiefs before he agreed to the treaty.

This treaty, written in Portuguese, specified that forts captured from the Portuguese would be garrisoned by the Dutch only ‘if the king (Rajasinha) thought fit’. .The Dutch thought otherwise, they planned to take full possession of these forts. So, they made a Dutch translation of the treaty where the phrase ‘if the king thought fit’ was left out. Goonewardena and Dewaraja say the omission was deliberate and well planned

Sterling qualities to be nurtured in children

article_image

KEY POINTS

*  Learning starts from very early childhood.

*  Being taught the basic desirable qualities of  life should begin at home.

* Many fine qualities could be inculcated in children through homeschooling.

* Parents should encourage these qualities  by setting a good example.

* Lack of some or most of these qualities is  the starting point for social and moral degradation.

The entire life of a human being is a learning experience. It is especially important during childhood. Children learn from various sources ranging from parents to books and even via the electronic media. These learning experiences start off right from birth and need to be guided both at home and in school. Experts say that successful and happy people, those who do well in their chosen careers and form satisfying relationships throughout their lives, tend to share certain sterling qualities. Indeed, parents can help nurture those key traits in their children, even when they are infants. Many of them expect these to be taught in schools. However, children put into the fiercely competitive school environments lack the confidence to even hold a conversation. Such children show little genuine interest in the topic of conversation and do not even know how to interact with people of various age groups, especially their elders.

Social skills are an area of considerable importance when it comes to homeschooling. Many critics point out that since humans needs to hone their social skills constantly, a homeschooling environment where social interaction is limited, is detrimental to growth and development. In contrast, children who learn well at home are more aware of the implications and the purpose of their learning. They will ask intelligent questions and make accurate observations. Children begin their life by imitating their parents. Homeschooled children therefore pick up the sterling qualities they see in their parents. On the other hand, they are protected from the detrimental influences of their peers. These children are thus better equipped with the tools necessary to face the world. The positive reinforcement that takes place in the homeschooling environment as opposed to being abandoned, embarrassed or ignored in a normal school environment strengthens their self-esteem. Such children turn out to be better balanced and well-rounded as they progress into adulthood.

Morningside threatened

Courtesy - The Island By Dr. Madhava Meegaskumbura

Over the past 540 million years, since what is referred to as the Cambrian Explosion when hard bodied animals and many other lineages first evolved, there have been five major biodiversity extinction events (popularly known as mass extinctions), where most of the organisms that were living on earth were wiped out. These extinction events were caused mostly by factors such as bolide/meteorite impacts on the Earth, volcanism and in a few instances by the evolution of distinct groups of organisms such as diversification of ferns, pines, conifers and flowering plants. Depending on the type of factor under issue, and the timing of the event, often either predominantly marine organisms or terrestrial organisms perished. However, currently, a single species, human beings, are causing the sixth major global extinction event. This is at an instance when our Earth is holding the greatest diversity of organisms ever to inhabit the Earth. Current human activities are influencing inhabitants of both the aquatic and the terrestrial realms.

Yoga as an alternative therapy for AIDS

Courtesy - Daily News - Chelliah Thuraiappah D.Y.T. Consultant Yoga Therapist

There are approximately 3,000 HIV patients in Sri Lanka, 1,250 of them have been clinically confirmed HIV positive cases. According to the statistics there are 40,000 sex workers in Sri Lanka. They serve over 200,000 men daily and each of them caters at least five to six clients per day. In addition there are 40,000 drugs addicts and 20,000 beach boys. This has paved way to add at least one HIV patient daily to the records. The present trend of flourishing tourism industry in Sri Lanka aftermath of the cessation of the war will further increase the number of HIV positive patients manifolds.

This has prompted the Global Fund to battle HIV/AIDS to allocate a huge sum of Rupees 3,550 million for two projects of proposals of Sri Lanka for HIV prevention and strengthening of the health service in Northern province by controlling AIDS, Malaria and Tuberculosis.

As we all know the Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome, or AIDS, is perhaps the most dreadful disease that spoils our immunity and gradually takes charge of all body systems. The culprit behind the disease is the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) that decreases the efficiency of the immune system gradually and leaves individuals prone to infections and tumors.

Say no to cancers in the womb!

The womb is the organ where a baby develops when a woman is pregnant. It is a muscular organ with a lining called the endometrial. It is important for women to take a very good care of their wombs since they are vulnerable to womb cancers. There are several types of cancers which occur within the womb.

Dr Gamini Perera
The three commonest womb cancers are cervical cancer, ovarian cancer and endometrial cancer, said Dr Gamini Perera, Consultant Obstetrician and Gynecologist of the Castle Street Hospital for Women, speaking to Daily News.

Cervical cancer

According to Dr Perera, cervical cancer is the commonest, which is often seen among women and it occurs in the neck of the womb. Cervical cancer starts in the cervix, the lower part of the uterus (womb) that opens at the top of the vagina. Middle-aged women (40-50) are mostly worried about this. It stems out of a virus. It can easily be detected during a pre-cancer stage by doing a Pap smear test which is painless at a medical clinic. It is safe, if detected during the pre-cancer stages.
Vaccination is available for this cancer and it should be done during the small ages to prevent from it. Dr Perera noted there are symptoms to identify the cancer. Main symptoms are abnormal bleeding, unusual heavy discharge which could be foul smelling, watery or thick, post-coital bleeding and bleeding in between regular menstrual periods.
If these symptoms are visible, there is a great possibility of a cervical cancer.
“Treatments are available for this cancer. In the pre-cancer stages, the local excision or burning can be done. When it is cancer, extensive surgery to remove a lot of parts of the womb and radiotherapy can be done. Radiotherapy is a treatment to destroy cancer cells with radiation. It can be given externally or internally. But the surgery is effective only in early stages. In the late stages it can be treated only with radio therapy. Cervical cancer associates with early sex and multiple partners,” Dr Perera stated.

Horrible Bosses…Many Will Empathise

The Sunday Leader By Sumaya Samarasinghe

Stuck in a job you hate? Not so much because you cannot handle it but more for the regularity of a monthly paycheque and the pitiful benefits it offers, why not add to that a nasty and cruel boss and
Horrible Bosses is a movie which has been tailor made just for you and will possibly offer a solution to all your “problems’…Not to be taken seriously of course!

Our three heroes and good buddies, Nick, Dale and Kurt are the endearing victims of their evil superiors. Nick (Jason Bateman) is a manager at a firm and has been led on to think by his corporate sadist maniac of a boss, Dave, played by the great Kevin Spacey; that he is next in line for a promotion.Within the first five minutes of their on screen time together, Dave pulls up Nick for arriving at 6:02a.m. at office instead of 6:00a.m. while forcing him to drink straight up, a full glass of scotch at 8:30 in the morning at work and this of course to refer to Nick’s “drinking problem” during a general staff meeting later in the day. It’s been a long time since we had seen Kevin Spacey in good form.He is capable of portraying such icy violence when he pulls up and humiliates his employees that this role makes us all remember what a great actor he is.
The next nightmare boss is Dr. Julia Harris played by a dark haired Jennifer Anniston as a sex maniac dentist who sexually harasses her dental assistant Dale (Charlie Day) who is engaged to be married.
This is probably the role which will redeem her career after a series of recent mediocre films such as The Bounty Hunter, Love Happens and The Switch. She threatens to tell Dale’s fiancé that they have slept together if he refuses to actually go to bed with her. While resisting vehemently, the poor man’s private parts are sprayed with water,he finds himself locked up in Julia’s room with her wearing nothing under her Doctor’s coat and his neck is regularly licked by his boss!
Our third victim is Kurt. At first he cannot empathise with his two other friends, until his beloved boss played by Donald Sutherland in a cameo role, dies of a heart attack and his company is taken over by his cocaine addicted useless son Bobby (Colin Farrell who is completely unrecognizable and seems to take immense pleasure in acting and looking like a complete loser).

Conflict leads to revelation of party secrets: JVP Rebel Leader's aliases, subversive past exposed Exclusive

Courtesy - The Island By Saman Indrajith

The on-going clash between the current JVP leadership and its rival faction led by Premkumar Gunaratnam has led to the revelation of many a party secret such as the identities of its underground cadres, clandestine operational centres and safe houses.

Last week's assault by the Gunaratnam faction on a Somawansa loyalist at Madiwela exposed the location of a JVP safe house used by hardcore JVPers whose identities are not known even to some of the senior members of the party active in mainstream politics. Within hours of the clash, a posse of police intelligence personnel descended on the place, ascertained as much information as possible and took into custody all the computers the JVP leaders had used there.

Aliases of some underground cadres known only to the members belonging to the party's inner cells are no longer secrets, The Island learns. JVP founder leader Rohana Wijeweera introduced a system of assigning pseudonyms to senior party members and thus the JVP became known for faces without names and vice versa. Wijeweera's actual name was Patabendige Don Nandasiri Wijeweera. He adopted nom de guerre 'Rohana' as he was from the south. The incumbent leader Somawansa Amarasinghe has been known as Siri Aiya to the JVP's rank and file and the party General Secretary Tilvin Silva is called Aiya. Its parliamentary group leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake is known as Aravinda to the JVP membership. The media spokesman of the dissident group, Pubudu Jagoda, is known as Lasith. The Colombo District Leader of the party is known only as Marlon and only a very few JVPers know him as Ranjith Shantha. The leader of the JVP security wing G. Kularatne is known as Sarath.
