Royal baby: the legacy of the Royal Georges

Prince George of Cambridge

The infant Prince George of Cambridge is the latest in a long line of royal Georges, with his six ruling namesakes leaving a colourful legacy which has defined the modern monarchy.

Former King Georges include one monarch considered "mad", another who locked his own wife in prison and a third who was the subject of a recent Oscar-winning film. One became the last king to fight alongside his own soldiers, two others stood as the backbone of the nation during the First and Second World Wars and one 19th century ruler created the palaces and pageantry of today’s monarchy.
