Elections Commissioner goes on pension



 
 (Lanka-e-News -24.March.2011, 11.45PM) It is reported that the Elections Commissioner Dayananda Dissanayake is going on pension with effect from today (24) .

The Deputy Elections Commissioner W. W. Mahinda Deshapriya with effect from tomorrow (25) will take over the post falling vacant . Mr. Mahinda Deshapriya is a brother of former free media movement convener Sunanda Deshapriya.

According to the 18th amendment that was passed in Parliament recently , it is the next in rank , the Deputy Commissioner who shall replace the Elections commissioner when he goes on pension.

Dayananda Dissanayake who announced the results of the last Presidential elections 2005 made a request to the President after the elections to give him permission to go on retirement. After this request however, a General election and a Presidential elections were held. If the Commissioner’s request was not granted , he would have had to retire only after six years following his request.
