Showing his colours

Showing his colours : This creative artist is more accustomed to and fond of the rice meal in Welikada jail than that of his own abode. That’s because he has been in prison 37 times since April 1991 serving drug related sentences. During periods in prison, he has produced artwork for eight pandals, 10 bhakthi gee, chariots, 10 floats and also drawn all murals at the new prison canteen. Painting seems to be in his blood since both his father and grandfather had been professional painters. His artwork had helped the Mahara prison to earn its highest income in 2001. Here, he repaints the mural depicting mother’s love on the Welikada Prison wall which he produced several years ago. Picture by Saman Sri Wedage.
