President attends Sri Lanka's World Cup opener against Canada

President Mahinda Rajapaksa today attended Sri Lanka's World Cup opener against Canada at his namesake stadium in Sooriyawewa, Hambanthota. Earlier, the Speaker of Sri Lanka parliament and Hambanthota district parliamentarian Chamal Rajapaksa declared open the newly-built international cricket stadium.


Sports Minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage, Deputy Minister Niomal Perera, Deputy Minister Mahinda Amaraweera, MP Namal Rajapaksa, Chief of President's Staff Gamini Senarath, High Commissioner of Canada Bruce Jery, and Chairman of Sri Lanka Cricket D.S de Silva were also present.
