Don’t want to invest in a new pair of stilettos? Here’s how you can accessorise your old pair These are the creation of a young Puerto Rican designer Sandrysabel Ortiz. They protect your heels from marks and scuffs, cover a damaged heel and jazz up your pair of stilettos without making you pay a hefty amount at a shoe store. These are heel condoms.
The idea is simple: You slip the condom over the heel of your stiletto and it is topped off by feathers, stones, flowers, or something similar. The liners or condoms are reusable, and could be an excellent solution for travellers who want more options without loading many shoes in their luggage.
The name was chosen to serve as a publicity stunt and they wanted it to have a greater recall value. "We needed the name to be memorable and heel condoms are just that!" Sandrysabel, who designed these heel condoms because she couldn’t carry a lot of footwear in her luggage while she was going on a holiday, told a website.
moreThe concept is extremely hot right now in various fashion websites and blogs. Says footwear designer Swati Modo, "It’s a brilliant concept. Heel condoms completely change the look of footwear. It’s like the cover of your mobile phone. You change it and the whole look of your phone is revamped." She adds, "The concept of heel protectors is new, which is why they are not readily available in stores as of now, but they can be bought online. Globally, the trend has been there for quite some time."
There are also groups for heel condoms on social networking sites, that are quite popular. One of the groups is liked by close to 7,000 people.
Shoe designer Samir Singh, who is not a great fan of the term heel condom, further explains the trend, "Heel condoms add new value to your existing pair of stilettos. But they look great only on high heels. You can play around with different colours and accessories to make your footwear look bright and stylish. Making one at home is also very easy".
