‘Regulations to enrol foreign students’

Chinese and Japanese students have shown interest to study the Sinhala Language at the Sri Lankan universities and the Higher Education Ministry was planning to introduce new regulations soon to enable the admission of such students, officials said yesterday.
Ministry Secretary Sunil Jayantha Navaratne told the Daily Mirror yesterday the Cabinet approval had already been given to give scholarships to 100 foreign students to study at the local universities.
In addition, Dr. Navaratne said foreign students would be allowed to pursue local studies after paying course fees.

“We are yet to get Cabinet approval for that. We will submit the Cabinet memorandum very soon. For each degree programme, university authorities will be given powers to admit a maximum of five percent of foreign students,” he said.
Asked about the courses that would be offered to foreign students he said, “There are demands for subjects such as Terrorism Management, Archaeology, Bio-diversity and Buddhism. Currently, there are around 300 foreign students, while 188 of them have been enrolled in courses related to Buddhism. Also, there are Chinese and Japanese students interested in studying the Sinhala Language,” he added.
