Flood havoc continues

At least three people were killed and 95,784 affected in floods caused by rains that lashed the country during the past few days, Disaster Management Centre sources said. Over 2,100 people belonging to 450 families have been displaced, they said. Eighty five acres of paddy cultivations were destroyed when a dam in Nochchikulam lake breached while 18 acres of paddy fields were destroyed after the Tallkulam lake dam breached. Tallkulam, Mudiruppuiuppeikulam, Talikulam, Taranikulam, Periyapulivanakum Semamadu and Arumuhanatpudukkulam roads also inundated, the sources said.
Districts affected by floods are Hambantota, Kurunegala, Kandy, Puttalam, Monaragala, Kegalle, Nuwaraeliya, Gampaha , Matale, Mannar, Vavuniya, Jaffna, Killinochchi, Ratnapura, Mullaitivu, Matara, Trincomalee and Anuradhapura. Affected families have been provided accommodation at schools, temples and community centres.
Six sluice gates in Inginimitiya, six of Tabbowa and 13 in Rajangana tank have been opened following heavy rains in the Puttalam district.
The Meteorological Department said, Hiniduma experienced the highest rain fall of 152.5 mm during the last 24 hours ending 8.30 am yesterday. Matugama experienced 110.5mm.
The department also predicted showers or thunder showers in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central and Southern province and sea areas of southern cause to day.
The Meteorological Department also predicted that, fairly heavy falls are likely at some places and fairy strong winds can be expected over the western slopes of the central hills.
