Orangutan gives birth at Zoo after 28 years

an orangutan was born on November 3, 2010 After 28 years and it was on public display for the first time at Dehiwela Zoo yesterday.

U Four and Aki gave birth to 'Sakifour' their first baby and named according to the first letter to suit the auspicious time and suggestions from the zookeepers and public.
Sakifour's parents were brought to Sri Lanka on November 11, 2003, from Eagathan Zoo, Indonesia, when they were three and one year old.
Akifour who is 44 days old, is still breast-fed and is in good health, according to zoo officials.
National Zoological Gardens Director, Bhashvara Senanka urged the public to give love and care to Akifour, a marvelous present Sri Lanka received after 28 years.
Orangutans live in Indonesia, Sumatra, Borneo and surrounding islands. The baby Akifour is kept away from his father for the baby's safety. Akifour depends only on breast milk and was looked after carefully, said Akifour's guardian P A S Wilson.
According to officials, Akifour has got the attraction of foreign zoos as well. Sri Lanka Freedom Party Chief Organizer and Ashok Leyland Company President Dhanasiri Amaratunge, Zoological Gardens Deputy Directors Dhammika Malsinge, Renuka Bandaranayake, Chamila Denagama were present at the occasion.
