Today (7th) is World Health Day. This year’s theme of the World Health Day is `Antimicrobial Resistance – No action today, no cure tomorrow’.
The Health Ministry has organized several programs to mark the event. `The exhibition `Jathika Suwa Abhiman - 2011’ will take place at the Entrance Square of the Colombo National Hospital on April 7 and 8. Health Minister Maithripala Sirisena will open the exhibition at 9.30 am today.
Read moreHealth Ministry Secretary Dr Ravindra Ruberu and WHO Representative to Sri Lanka Dr R F Mehta will also be present. The exhibition is aimed at educating the public on diseases, treatment, health services and all related subjects. This will be a good opportunity for the Sri Lankan public, especially for students to gain knowledge on health, diseases and treatment.
This year’s theme is based on the use of antibiotics. Antibiotics should be used rationally. Antibiotic resistance has already become a burning issue in Sri Lanka and all other countries. The use of antibiotics in an irrational way leads to antibiotic resistance. Non availability of usable drugs (available drugs never heal illnesses), longer suffering, loss of wealth due to high cost of drugs etc are some of the adverse effects of antibiotic resistance.
