COLOMBO — Sri Lanka on Friday dropped veteran batsman Sanath Jayasuriya and bowler Chaminda Vaas from its 15-man squad for the World Cup that runs from February to April.
Jayasuriya, a parliamentarian, and Vaas were part of the team that won the country's sole World Cup in 1996, and had been included in the preliminary squad of 30 announced on December 13.
Vaas, 36, last played for Sri Lanka in August 2008 and Jayasuriya, 41, in December 2009.
Sri Lanka Cricket did not give reasons for dropping the two veterans and others including Suraj Randiv, Dinesh Chandimal and Rangana Herath, who had also been included in the squad of 30.
The squad: Kumar Sangakkara (captain), Mahela Jayawardene (vice captain), Upul Tharanga, Tillakaratne Dilshan, Thilan Samaraweera, Chamara Silva, Chamara Kapugedera, Angelo Mathews, Tissara Perera, Nuwan Kulasekara, Lasith Malinga, Dilhara Fernando, Muttiah Muralitharan, Ajantha Mendis, Rangana Herath.
