South Korean Ambassador to Sri Lanka Dr. Choi Kichul assured Healthcare Minister Maithripala Sirisena that Sri Lankan expatriates would be given protection in the event of the current tension between North Korea and South Korea developing into a war. Minister Sirisena told The Island that a large number of Sri Lankans were employed in South Korea and the government was concerned about their plight in the event of war.

He said he had asked Ambassador Dr. Kichul whether the South Korean government had taken steps to protect the expatriates in the event of a war braking out. The ambassador had assured that his government had already taken action to protect all expatriates, including Sri Lankans.

Minister Sirisena said that a new programme "Experience Exchange of Health Workers" between Sri Lanka and South Korea would be launched soon and Sri Lankan health workers and Korean health workers would be able to visit one another’s country to gain experience in their relevant fields.
