Japan nuke blast: No effect on Lanka, monitoring continues

The blast in the Fukushima Daini nuclear power plant has not affected Sri Lanka. No one has been reported to have been contaminated upto now, Sri Lanka Atomic Energy Authority (SLAEA) Chairman Wimaladharma Abeywickrama said. The SLAEA has opened a special unit to test people arriving in Sri Lanka from Japan or any other country affected by nuclear radiation, he said.
This unit has been established at the Atomic Energy Authority, Baseline Road, Orugodawatte.

China and Korea close to the area affected by nuclear pollution have also expedited to set up experiment units. Following the blast at the Fukushima Daini nuclear power plant in Japan, the SLAEA took action to commence experiments about air pollution in Sri Lanka, the Chairman said.
The Sri Lanka Atomic Energy Authority has established six centres to collect data on air pollution in Sri Lanka, Abeywickrama said. These centres are in Colombo, Kandy, Galle, Matara, Anuradhapura and Trincomalee. People affected by nuclear radiation will show some symptoms such as vomiting, headache, diarrhoea, nausea and lethargy. Long term affects might be dangerous, he said.
