MP Swarnamali, participating in the debate on extending the state of emergency, said a section of the media had tarnished her image. An irate MP said that in spite of the Sri Lankan women making a  huge contribution to the national economy, about 60 per cent of them were victims of domestic violence.

President Mahinda Rajapaksa had brought a Bill against domestic violence, the MP said adding that the ‘Mathata Thitha’ programme alone cannot ensure a country free of violence against women. All must contribute to eliminate violence against women, she said.
