Teledrama star turned politician, Gampaha District MP Upkeksha Swarnamali, on Wednesday (9) emphasized the need to eliminate domestic violence. She said government and Opposition MPs should join hands to tackle the problem.
She was making her first appearance in parliament after receiving treatment at the Sri Jayewardenepura hospital, for injuries received at the hands of her husband, who is out on bail.

President Mahinda Rajapaksa had brought a Bill against domestic violence, the MP said adding that the ‘Mathata Thitha’ programme alone cannot ensure a country free of violence against women. All must contribute to eliminate violence against women, she said.
