Australia and Sri Lanka are back on speaking terms after Glenn Maxwell visited the tourists’ dressing room where both teams apologised for the fiery confrontation that marred Monday night’s Twenty20 match at the MCG.

Sri Lanka’s tour of Australia finished in ugly scenes as players argued on the field following the world number one team’s two-run win in the second Twenty20.

The altercation started when all-rounder Maxwell, who needed four runs from the final ball to clinch victory for Australia, expressed his anger at Sri Lanka’s drawn out team discussion before Thisara Perera beat the bat on the decisive delivery to clinch a 2-0 series result.

The wetland wonder at Nugegoda

An exceedingly charming and functionally well-conceived, designed and planned park was built and donated to the townsfolk of Nugegoda by the Urban Development Authority (UDA) a few days ago. It’s aptly named Nugegoda Wetland Park (NWP).

When entering the park from the Nawala Road, the first thought that strikes one is what a rich potential the wet landscapes of our country possess as areas for relaxation and leisure for urban dwellers in Sri Lanka. There could be many other locations of this nature in close proximity to towns and urban centres in our motherland. However, the excellent concepts in urban development need excellent leadership to be turned into reality.

Fortunately, the country now has such a leadership to implement sound concepts in urban development into reality through real public goods such as parks, safe roads and markets. The efforts of Secretary of Defence Gotabaya Rajapaksa, who took over the additional responsibility of the UDA, and the members of the Security Forces in the delivery of public goods and services to urban dwellers in the country deserve much praise.

The skin's response to UVA light

Last year, a team of researchers at Brown University discovered that certain skin cells use a light-sensitive receptor found outside of the eye to sense ultraviolet light and quickly begin pumping out melanin to protect against DNA damage. In a new study, lab members identify a key player in that biomolecular chain of events that could some day become a pharmacological target for improving this protective response.

The new discovery, published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, is that human melaoncyte skin cells rely on an ion channel called TRPA1 to allow a flood of calcium ions into the cells when they are exposed to UVA light.

The resulting abundance of calcium ions signals the cell to begin making melanin, the pigment responsible for the tanning response in people.

TRCSL to ban use of unregistered mobile phones

Sri Lanka Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (TRCSL) has decided to ban the imported mobile phones that are not registered with the TRC.

TRC says modern equipment will be used to identify the unregistered mobile phones and remove them from use.

TRC Director General Anusha Palpita has said that all imported mobile phones should be registered and they are required to meet certain safety regulations.

The TRC will block the signals to the unregistered phones, he said.

TRC has taken steps to maintain a Central Equipment Identity Register and all the phones failing to register will be disabled by blocking the International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) numbers.

However, the users of unregistered mobile phones at present will be granted a grace period to get them registered, a spokesman of the TRC said.

Emma: Best-laid plans gone wrong

Douglas McGrath’s Gwyneth Paltrow starrer Emma may have been adapted by Jane Austen’s globally known classic but it does not do much justice to the original text. The movie centers too much on Emma Woodhouse and George Knightley and hardly leaves room for other characters.

Emma Woodhouse has beauty, wealth and a loving family. Smug and self confident Emma spends her time matchmaking for her friend Harriet Smith. Her interest is sparked off from successfully pairing her governess to a local widower.

Then she sets her sights on the lower born and easily led Harriet and tries to marry her off to the local vicar, Reverend Elton and later Frank Churchill. Her naïve schemes are as funny as well as excruciating.

No doubt Emma makes an unlikely heroine and to echo Austen’s own words Emma is the ‘heroine no one will like.’So it is a challenge for Paltrow to portray the young girl in a manner which will amuse the audience at the beginning and even make them dislike her slightly before accepting her in her new found mature light at the end of the story.

At first take Emma seems to be a snobbish young lady from the well to do class but once we get to know her better we realize that she is actually well meaning and good hearted and all her actions are taken with a good intention in mind. When disaster strikes she is touchingly venerable. This draws the audience to her.

However inexperienced as she is Emma does not realize that some of her comments and actions will bear bitter fruit and actually hurt others. She learns this only through practice and shines as the good hearted girl she actually is.

Paltrow achieves this aspect with unwavering grace as Emma finally finds happiness in the arms of George Knightley. She is undoubtedly the star of the movie as the other characters are played by lesser known actors who fail to live up to her charms.

The beginning of a new digital era

December 31, 2012 will enter history as a day that changed the world. No, not because the world ‘survived’ a predicted Mayan apocalypse and lived to see a December 31, but because a fundamental shift in the way we learn about our world took place on that day.

Newspapers and magazines are part and parcel of our daily life. We take them for granted. We eagerly flip through the pages of the morning newspapers to read the news, laugh at a cartoon, soak in a feature article and get the scores of last night’s game. It is a tradition that goes back 300 years or more. From the ‘ugly’ black and white designs of the early days to the colourful pages of today, newspapers have evolved to keep pace with the times.

Magazines are an extension of the newspaper, in that they cover a vast gamut of subjects that no newspaper can cover. News magazines publish in-depth articles by top writers and journalists that newspapers might not be able to carry for want of space and/or resources. Today, there are thousands of magazines at news-stands worldwide, specialising in everything from angling to zoos. Magazines are generally more attractive than newspapers and easier to read.

However, print in whatever form is a passive experience. To those who are increasingly used to the interactive world of the Internet and smartphone apps, print can be boring and unrewarding. Print publications were the first to realise this and move on to the Internet with digital editions. In fact, this newspaper was among the first in Asia to have a web presence way back in 1995.

Abhises Abhiman: 50,800 trainee graduates recruit to government sector

The national function ‘Abhises Abhiman’ to present letters of appointment to trainee graduates who were recruited to government service in 2012 was held under the patronage of the President Mahinda Rajapaksa at Sugathadasa Stadium this morning on 12 January.

Under this programme all graduates who have completed one year’s training are being provided permanent employment in the government sector. By doing so the government has created a record by granting permanent employment to 50,800 trainee graduates. All the graduates who were recruited under the ‘Development Officer’ constitution will be granted all government benefits including the female graduates who have completed 9 months of training are eligible for 84 days of maternity leave.

President Rajapaksa symbolically handed over appointment letters to three Sinhala, Tamil and Muslim graduates at the ceremony. Addressing the graduates the President said that all newly recruited graduates should be committed at the highest and satisfactory level to build a disciplined and developed country. He further stated that in the period of terror under the past governments the graduates and undergraduates had become the main targets. There was a time when university education and the degree certificate guaranteed a death certificate for them. Comparatively the graduates face no such problems under this government. Therefore the decision to offer employment to the graduates was taken on behalf of the country.

Speaking at the occasion the President said that the government provided Samurdhi benefits to the people despite numerous challenges and it will continuously provide employment to the graduates in the same manner. He said that in developed countries only 2.5% are in the government service. They do not authorise the rate to exceed 3%. In Sri Lanka 12% are in the government service. He said that the government is therefore bearing a huge burden with regard to salaries.

Addressing the ceremony, Minister of Public Administration and Home Affairs, W.D.J. Seneviratne said that the graduates not to be duped by false propaganda as they will be granted permanent employment after the training period of one year. He further emphasised that the government will not hesitate to grant permanent employment for graduates. The minister said that no difference, with regard to political party, community, area, caste or creed has been made when making the appointments as only their degree qualification was considered coving all 25 administrative districts.

The Sri Lanka Freedom Association of Graduates also presented a felicitation award to the President. Appreciating the move the newly appointed graduates said that none of the governments have treated the young graduates in this manner. They said that they appreciate the benefits extended by the government and it is of immense benefit to the unemployed graduates. After the ceremony, President Rajapaksa walked to the graduates and waved at them.

Ministers Maithripala Sirisena, Dullas Alahapperuma and Ranjith Siyambalapitiya were amongst those who participated in the occasion. Venerable Maha Sangha, other religious leaders, many parliamentarians, local politicians, government officials, parents and a large crowd were present.

The inheritances of the disinherited

Asoka Handagama’s journey in Sri Lankan cinema thus far has been one where his name has become more or less welded to the reputation of a controversialist. Controversy seems almost what Handagama has inherited as a result of what he bequeathed or tried to bestow to Sri Lankan cinema. His latest work however has not suffered the fate of his previous work Aksharaya (The letter of fire), and has found acceptability with the authorities.

Towards a Sri Lankan cinema

Ini avan (Him, hereafter) has been much talked about as it debuted in the local cinema circuit for several reasons one may suppose. One would be that it is by Handagama, a name that smacks with the gossip-worthy juiciness of what is controversial. And another would be that this film although by a director who belongs to the Sinhala ethnicity in Sri Lanka, doesn’t really qualify as a Sinhala film. Ini avan is a Tamil film by a Sinhala director which marks a milestone in the gradual formation of a fuller ‘Sri Lankan cinema’ genre, one may propound.

Through the theme, the language choices he has made in creating this work of cinema, Handagama has certainly engaged an array of politics that is not only related to the post-war situation in our country but also how art as a means of expression to understand human conditions and realities in the post-war scenario needs to be looked at anew.

Toddlers' language skills predict less anger by preschool

Toddlers with more developed language skills are better able to manage frustration and less likely to express anger by the time they're in preschool. That's the conclusion of a new longitudinal study from researchers that appears in the journal Child Development.

"This is the first longitudinal evidence of early language abilities predicting later aspects of anger regulation," according to Pamela M. Cole, liberal arts research professor of psychology at Pennsylvania State University, who was the principal investigator of the study.

Angry outbursts such as temper tantrums are common among toddlers, but by the time children enter school, they're expected to have more self-control. To help them acquire this skill, they're taught to use language skills like "using your words." This study sought to determine whether developing language skills relates to developing anger control. Does developing language ability reduce anger between ages 2 and 4?

Researchers looked at 120 predominantly White children from families above poverty but below middle income from the time they were 18 months to 48 months. Through home and lab visits, they measured children's language and their ability to cope with tasks that might elicit frustration.

In one lab-based task, children were asked to wait 8 minutes before opening a gift while their mothers finished "work" (a series of questions about how the child usually coped with waiting).

සෞඛ්‍ය ක්ෂේත්‍රයේ ලිංගික හිංසන

යම් තැනැත්තකුට හෝ තැනැත්තියකට වචනයෙන්, ක‍්‍රියාවෙන් හෝ ඉඟියකින් ලිංගික හිංසනයක් කිරීම වසර 5ක සිර දඬුවම් ලැබිය හැකි වරදකි. එවැනි වරදක සැකකරුවකු පොලිසියට වරෙන්තුවක් නැතිව අත්අඩංගුවට ගත හැකිය. පොලිසියට එවැනි පැමිණිල්ලක් සමථයකට පත් කළ නොහැකිය. එවැනි චෝදනාවකට ලක්වූවකු මහේස්ත‍්‍රාත්වරයෙක් ඉදිරියට පැමිණවීම අනිවාර්ය වෙයි.

වෛද්‍යවරුන්, වරියන් 14,000ක්, හෙද හෙදියන් 24000ක් ඇතුළුව 109000ක සේවා බලඇණියක් සහිත සෞඛ්‍ය අමාත්‍යාංශයේ රෝහල් ඇතුළු අනුබද්ධ ආයතන මගින් මෙසේ පැමිණිලි ලැබෙන බව පවසන්නේ සෞඛ්‍ය අමාත්‍යාංශමය.
